First Osprey 03-26, Essex Great Meadow. Yay!
The Bridge Osprey was at the platform on March 27 afternoon! How exciting! Hope the mate makes it home soon. First Osprey we saw on the river was at the Great Meadow in Essex, March 26 afternoon, a little later than usual.
Goodspeed Eagles are still incubating. Expected hatch date: March 31-ish. An eagles’s nest further north up river (this may be the Haddam Island couple whose nest tree toppled last spring) is incubating. Hamburg Cove nest, we think there may be a chick based on adult activity. One is kinda setting up a “this is my home” perimeter. The Nott Island eagle couple may have relocated to a pine tree on the mainland in the area, unfortunately not visible from the river. However, it is close enough that we may see one of the adults hanging out on the river. Other Old Lyme nests, Cathy is checking into their progress. We are still seeing at least a dozen eagles in the area, mostly young birds.
Double Crested Cormorants are returning; Great Cormorants disappearing. Red-winged Black Birds and Tree Swallows have been seen.
So, lots happening on the river this time of year. Come aboard an Osprey/Eagle Cruises and see what we can find! Just nice to get on the river in SPRING!
